What Is 14k PVD Stainless Steel jewellery?

And Why Permanent Jewellery Artists Love the Weld™ Lifetime Collection

When you offer permanent jewellery, a couple of questions come up again and again:
Will this tarnish? Will this break?

Clients want jewellery they can wear every day without thinking about it.
As artists, we need materials we can trust.

That’s exactly why we created the Weld™ Lifetime Collection.

What is PVD stainless steel?

PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition.

Instead of painting or dipping the metal, manufacturers bond colour to stainless steel using a high-tech vacuum process. This creates a molecular-level bond between the metal and the finish, making it far more durable than traditional plating.

In simple terms:
PVD stainless steel is made for jewellery that stays on.

Why stainless steel works so well for permanent jewellery

Permanent jewellery goes through a lot.

Water.
Sweat.
Skincare.
Gym sessions.
Sea swims.
Real life.

That’s why we chose 316L stainless steel for this collection.

Jewellers and medical manufacturers use 316L stainless steel because it resists corrosion and stays stable against the skin. It’s one of the safest and most durable grades available for jewellery.

316L stainless steel is:

  • Tarnish resistant

  • Hypoallergenic and nickel-safe

  • Strong but comfortable to wear

  • Suitable for continuous, long-term wear

For clients who worry about reactions or discolouration, this material offers real peace of mind.

Why we chose 14k PVD instead of 18k

While 18k gold sounds luxurious, it didn’t suit what we wanted this collection to do.

In PVD finishes, 18k tones often look too yellow or brassy, especially in delicate chain styles. We wanted a colour that felt refined, wearable, and timeless.

That’s why we chose 14k PVD.

It creates a soft champagne gold tone that sits beautifully against the skin and alongside fine jewellery. The silver steel option closely resembles rhodium-plated silver or white gold, without the polishing or upkeep.

The client pain points this collection solves

Every permanent jewellery artist has heard these comments:

  • “I never take my jewellery off.”

  • “I swim all the time.”

  • “I live in the gym.”

  • “I’m quite heavy handed.”

  • “I want something delicate but strong.”

  • “I don’t want to worry about tarnishing.”

Gold, gold-filled, sterling silver and vermeil all have their place, and we still offer them. But they aren’t always the best option for every client.

The Weld™ Lifetime Collection exists for these exact moments.

A practical solution every artist should have available

This collection doesn’t replace other metals.
It supports them.

It gives you a confident option for clients who need:

  • Extra strength

  • Maximum durability

  • Low-maintenance wear

It’s especially popular with swimmers, gym lovers, active clients, and anyone who wants delicate jewellery without compromise.
